PSHCE and RSHE
Intent
At St Nicholas’, we deliver an ambitious, question-led PSHCE and RSE curriculum that aims to provoke children’s curiosity to question their own beliefs and actions more deeply. It helps children gain understanding of Relationships, Health and Wellbeing alongside knowledge of the Wider World and their place within it. Communicating their thoughts, feelings and ideas confidently and respectfully when they conflict with others.
It builds foundations for children to know where we are and know what is there, giving us a sense of location; to understand the spatial layout, locations and organisation of the world and recognise the spatial distributions, landscape patterns and relationships in the environment.
A deep curriculum of knowledge and understanding means that children’s learning progresses to match their stage of development. Although the children may appear to cover the same concept several times, additional content leads to an increasing depth of knowledge which is matched to the children’s growing maturity. Additionally, this approach ensures that all lessons cover content in an age-appropriate manner.
Our scheme of work throughout school years 1 to 6 have been produced to be fully in line with the Learning Outcomes and Core Themes outlined in the 2020 PSHE Association Programme of Study, which is recommended and referred to by the DfE in all key documentation relating to PSHE provision in schools. Additionally, the content of this curriculum has been matched to the 2020 Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education Guidance. In EYFS children work to the standards in the PSED area of their curriculum. All aims are taught through the three core areas of PSHE and Citizenship education, which are: Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World.
Implementation and Lesson Design in PSHCE and RSE
In line with our teaching and learning policy at St Nicholas CE Primary, and based on best practice guidance from the PSHCE Association, our PSHCE lessons will be structured in a way that optimises learning for all children.
- Create a safe environment (revisit expectations)
- Baseline task to identify current understanding
- Explore the Big Question as a class, group or individual
- Reflecting and Endpoint Assessment.
Impact
Our PSHCE and RSE curriculum ensures that when children leave us at the end of Year 6, they are able to communicate their knowledge and understanding confidently as global citizens who are developing a secure understanding of the world they live in. Their curiosity will mean that as they progress onto secondary school, the knowledge and understanding gained will set a firm foundation on which learning can be built.
